[APPLAUSE] Are you guys sure Hi, Mom and Dad.
Love you.
Members of the President Olsen, faculty, staff, families, guests, the teachers that this and my fellow graduates.
First, I'd like to say congratulations to each and I'm so honored to be yapping When I found out that I here today, I was I was never the most I didn't join any clubs.
I wasn't active in any and to be perfectly honest, there was at least one time the very same dean of the Student Commencement But after some reflection, I think that the reason I was selected is pretty I'm perfectly ordinary.
Maybe I wasn't but not all of us are.
I mean, how are we clubs when we're working And sure, I may not have the final was usually and the base has $5 [APPLAUSE] I know that some of us came high school with a clear path Some of us, on the other hand, changed our major three times, took a class because a and just hoped it would As for myself, I struggled The first time I I flunked out of a class or two.
And I eventually made it After a gap year, I decided to try again with My friend Joe was coming so he drove up for Little did I know that that telling my roommate of now three years at this very moment, "Hey, Joe, we made it."
I don't know where he's at.
[LAUGHTER] I still remember [LAUGHTER] We were closer to her age than anyone else that was And I have to say that being a yellow bagger at 20 But she made us feel welcome.
She helped us realize that just because we weren't a high school didn't mean that we wouldn't In fact, if you fast-forward you'd find me listening to a live band in the And I think that most of you experience would make anyone fall in love with That's my Day 1 story, and I'm sure there's in this group just like it.
I didn't struggle at Northern, I didn't struggle with classes, and I didn't struggle And I certainly to call those same This place, Market, Northern, it has a welcoming atmosphere that makes everyone Whether you're a or non-traditional like me, whether you have or you don't even know where This place opens its doors "Come in, and we'll There's a quote from a a user who goes by the name of Viridian Masquerade that reads, "I'm a mosaic of everyone I've ever loved, I love this quote.
See, I always crush up my ramen before I make it because that's how my best friend did it when I was a kid.
I listen to Anna Bates because a two-week talking stage once told me it was one of I always eat all the food on my plate because my dad finished what and he made it a point that And I became a teacher because my mom showed me is to have a career that you love and times to spend As a mosaic, it is our success without the people who helped us get it.
So to the professors who made us feel like we were intelligent to the ones who made us feel further, like Katherine Johnson, who is up for a and there are hundreds there wearing a we just want you to supporting you, [APPLAUSE] To all the friends at cafes while we to the ones who after we got back and to all the ones who next time when those grades And of course, to the family but we're always at the phone to offer no matter the time of day, because they wouldn't Graduates, I'd like to ask try and find our loved ones.
And while you do, remember While there may be shards from everyone that we've ever our friends and family are Family, friends, we could not and on behalf of all of us.
Thank you.
This chapter of Today's ceremony may but it's also a beginning.
When I look out into this crowd, I not only see a but I see people who a difference in ways that we can't even begin to imagine yet.
So, as we walk across this stage into the next let's enjoy it because every late night, every time we weren't sure we could do it, but And while we might if these last few years it's that we will persevere.
And whatever comes next, I We didn't get here alone.
We're not going So, one last time, to the many friends strangers who I now can't to the best cohort of teachers that this and for the entirety of the class of 2026, [APPLAUSE] Thank you, Blake.
Great job.

Ruge to deliver the commencement Dr Ruge, I like it.
I am particularly honored to be your commencement speaker informed by Blake that this particular graduating the humblest, and the most [BACKGROUND] [NOISE] In of Northern Michigan [APPLAUSE] I grew up in Monomi, just 2 hours of here in God's It was a wonderful upbringing.
But the rocket fuel of my life came from my when I met amazing people who introduced me to great ideas and the many possibilities in life.
People like my political Dr Bob Kulisheck, and my journalism So many of the important my life can be traced directly back to After I graduated, I spent a decade working on Capitol went to law school, and then joined K and L Gates, one of the largest law where I've worked ever since.
And I can trace it all back I've been extremely some amazing people here at Northern on Capitol Hill What I want to talk in my short time, is about the one common who I have met over those years who have made the biggest The one common characteristic of those super achievers They are nearly In fact, in many cases, kindness is their superpower, and kindness can be So, what do I mean by kindness, because there's For these super achievers, I don't necessarily Some were definitely nice, but nice is not the first Basically, they were They listened without When I needed something, even when it was inconvenient they made time to help me.
They put me above themselves.
These individuals left me even though I wasn't To put it in the most when I was talking to them, they were not checking Here are a few kindness is such a very First of all, we all know kindness is the Do unto others as you would What could be a more Have you noticed how kind people have a moral glow about It's like they've figured out the single most life, and they're living it.
Second, kindness has this The person who received but the people who gives too, sometimes even better.
We've all experienced that.
Third, people like That should be enough reason They want to be, and they Kindness compounds.
And fourth, kindness stays with people.
As you may have sometimes be an unkind place.
When I first came to a certain group of people on campus were particularly I knew no one then when I Sheryl, Jackie, Paul, Gill, Jim, Don, Tony, and Steve.
I don't even remember all the things they did, but nearly 50 years later, I still remember their kindness, and I always will.
So I'm your and I have to give That's my job.
My advice to You've done the hard work here at Northern to a fulfilling career in the important roles of As you move on from exciting chapter of your lives, resolve to make kindness a guiding principle Use the many examples of kindness that I'm sure Northern as a motivator to make kindness not just something that occasionally happens but something you consistently Make it the superpower In fact, from my experience, my many decades of experience, that combination of being willing to work hard, and being there for people around you makes things happen.
I'll bet you've witnessed It's part of what the upper peninsula I'll end with an inspiring Mary, who is a great We've been together I met her here at Northern.
Our wedding reception was 20 or so years ago, Mary came to me and said, I'd like us to adopt That was surprising to me two very established who are in high and I thought our But then she added this wrinkle.
She said, I'd like us to adopt a little girl a handicapped little girl, because those are the hardest time And then, apparently seeing she basically said to me, " Don't worry, I'll do Long story short.
We did adopt Mia, who had been abandoned a cardboard box outside And of course, my wife has done the heavy lifting But here's the great Mary and I and our family back than we gave by bringing this amazing And that's just one the wonderful It grows exponentially promise will surprise I'll close with one of my This one from the I'm paraphrasing here a bit, but he offers what the single best bits of life advice that I He said, " Find out what Those things that bring out and unafraid version and then go after if nothing else really matters".
Because actually, nothing And again, congratulations, NMU class of 2026.
[APPLAUSE].
Thank you again, Dr Ruge.
